Privacy policy
The short version. Roadlie records video, audio, location and motion on your phone to work as a dash cam. That recording stays on the phone. Only if you turn on cloud backup do incident clips (and a few facts about them) go to our servers, where they are private to you, deleted after 30 days unless you keep them, and never sold, analysed for ads or shared with anyone you didn't send a link to. The app also sends an anonymous daily usage summary and crash reports, which you can switch off.
Who we are
Roadlie ("we", "us") makes the Roadlie dash cam app and runs roadlie.com. You can reach us through the contact form.
What the app does on your phone
To work as a dash cam, Roadlie uses the following on your device:
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Camera video (road, and cabin if your phone supports two cameras) | Dash cam recording | Stored on the phone in a loop, oldest overwritten first |
| Microphone audio | Sound in recordings (can be turned off in Settings) | Part of the video files on the phone |
| Precise location and speed (GPS) | Speed and position overlay on the video, location of incidents, navigation | Stamped into the video on the phone |
| Accelerometer (motion) | Detecting crashes and hard braking so the clip is locked | Processed on the phone; only the peak g-force of an incident is kept |
None of this is sent anywhere unless you turn on cloud backup (below). We have no access to footage that stays on your phone.
Recording in the background
A dash cam has to keep recording while you use other apps — maps, music, calls — and while the screen is off. Roadlie therefore uses the camera, microphone and location in the background while a recording is running. This is always shown by a persistent notification and by Android's camera/microphone indicators, and it stops when you stop recording or the phone is unplugged (depending on your settings). Roadlie does not use the camera, microphone or location in the background when it isn't recording, and never to collect data for any other purpose.
Cloud backup (optional)
Cloud backup is off until you turn it on. When it is on, Roadlie uploads only incident clips — clips locked by crash detection, by a hazard event, or saved by you — never everyday driving footage. For each incident it uploads:
- the clip(s): road camera, and cabin camera if recorded — including any audio in them;
- a thumbnail image;
- the time of the incident, its location (latitude/longitude), the reason (crash, hazard or manual) and the peak g-force;
- your phone's model name and the Roadlie app version (to help us support you).
Cloud backup does not use an account, name, email or phone number. The app gets a random device identifier and secret from our server, and a private link to your clips.
Purpose
We store these clips only so that you can watch, download and share them if your phone is lost, damaged or stolen. We don't look at them, analyse them, use them to train anything, or show ads.
Where it's stored
Clips are stored in Cloudflare R2 object storage and their details in a Cloudflare D1 database, operated by Cloudflare, Inc. on our behalf. Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest. Cloudflare may process data in data centres in different countries.
How long we keep it
- Each incident is deleted automatically 30 days after it was uploaded, unless you mark it Keep in the viewer. Kept incidents stay until you delete them or delete all your data.
- You can mark incidents Keep up to a total of 1 GB per phone.
- Each phone has a storage limit of 2 GB. When it's full, new uploads wait until you delete older clips or they expire.
- Uploads that never finish are discarded after 7 days.
Preventing abuse
To limit how many cloud backups can be set up from one network, we count sign-ups per network address per day. We store only a one-way hash of the address combined with a secret that changes every day — never the address itself — and delete these counters after 2 days.
Who can see your clips
Only people with your private viewer link, and people you send a share link to. A share link shows one incident and stops working when it expires (you choose 24 hours to 30 days). Anyone who has a link can see what it points to, so treat them like keys. You can replace your private link in the app at any time, which immediately disables the old one. Our private pages tell browsers and search engines not to index them or pass them on as referrers.
We don't sell or rent data, and we don't share it with anyone, except Cloudflare as our hosting provider and where we are legally required to (for example, a valid court order).
Anonymous usage statistics and crash reports
To find bugs and understand which phones and features to support, the app sends us a small anonymous report once a day, and a report when the app crashes. You can turn this off at any time in Settings → Send anonymous usage statistics; it is on by default.
What a daily report contains: the app version, whether it's a test build; the phone's manufacturer, model and Android version, and whether it supports two cameras or runs in a dedicated (kiosk) mode; and counts for that day — minutes recorded, number of segments and sessions, number of crash/hazard/manual events, how recording was started, minutes the phone was too hot, whether navigation or Android Auto were used, whether cloud backup is on, bytes uploaded and failed uploads.
What a crash report contains: the app version, phone model and Android version, the time, and the technical error (exception type, message and the app's part of the stack trace).
What they never contain: no video, audio, images, location or speed, no incident details, no account or contact information, and not the cloud backup device identifier.
- Reports are tied to a random install ID created when the app is first opened. It is not linked to your cloud backup, your Google account, or the phone's hardware IDs, and reinstalling the app creates a new one.
- When a report arrives, we record the country it came from, which Cloudflare derives from the network address. We do not store IP addresses.
- Reports are kept for 13 months and then deleted. We only look at them in aggregate (for example "how many phones run Android 14").
- We use no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the app.
The website
roadlie.com does not use cookies for visitors and contains no ads or third-party trackers. We may use Cloudflare Web Analytics on the public pages (not on private viewer or share pages); it is cookie-less and counts page views without identifying you. Like any website, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver pages and protect against abuse; we don't store it in our database (apart from the short-lived hashed counter described above).
Contact form
When you use the contact form, we receive the topic, your message, your email address, and — if you enter them — your name and phone model, plus the time and the country the message was sent from (derived from the network address, which we don't store). We use this only to read and reply to your message. It is stored in our database and forwarded to our support inbox by email (Cloudflare Email Service), and deleted from our database after 180 days. To keep spam out, the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile, a privacy-preserving check that does not use cookies for tracking, and we keep a short-lived hashed counter of submissions per network address (deleted after 2 days).
Deleting your data
You can delete your cloud data at any time, without contacting us:
- In the app: Settings → Cloud backup → Delete all cloud data. This deletes every clip, thumbnail and incident detail, and the device record.
- In the viewer: delete single incidents, or use "Delete all my data" on your private viewer page.
- On the web: paste your private viewer link on roadlie.com/delete.
- Through the contact form: send us a message with the topic "Privacy & data deletion". If you no longer have your link, tell us roughly when you uploaded and the phone model and we'll do our best to identify the data.
Deletion takes effect immediately; data in backups or caches is gone within 30 days. Uninstalling the app deletes everything stored on the phone but not cloud data — delete that first. Anonymous usage reports can't be linked to you, so they can't be looked up for deletion; they expire after 13 months.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or export your data and to object to processing. The viewer lets you download all your clips. For anything else, contact us. Our legal basis for cloud backup is your request (contract); for anonymous statistics it is our legitimate interest in keeping the app working, and you can opt out at any time. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Roadlie is a tool for drivers and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent age where you live). We don't knowingly collect data from children.
Recording other people
Dash cam footage can show other road users and passengers. You are responsible for using Roadlie in line with the law where you drive, including telling passengers if the cabin camera or audio is on. See the terms of use.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app before they apply.
